meet hugo.
breed: Mini Schnauzer.
age: 18 months.
instagram: Unplugged pooch.
favourite treat: Chunky carrot pieces.
favourite cuddles: On his back, legs splayed apart with me stroking his tummy.
favourite game: Hide and seek. I hide, he tries to find me and when he does, I leap out and he goes crazy. He’ll do it over and over again.
what gets their tail wagging most? When I pop to the shops for 5 minutes and return to see him. You’d think I’d been away for a month.
what job do hugo and chris do? Chris works for a small company, known as a ‘biotech’, that develops new drugs for cancer patients. He works with the scientists to design clinical trials to test if the new drugs are safe and if they might make the patients better. It’s a really exciting job! Hugo is team mascot for one of the drug projects that I work on and attends many of the meetings we have.
what was their first day in the office like? He was still less than 1 year old at this point and therefore a bit nervous! He struggled up the open tread staircase, enticed by a few treats, and then curled up under my desk. As word got out that he was there a queue of people formed outside the office who all took it turns to rub his belly and snap shots of him in various positions. He loved every second of it!
how often does hugo go to the office? Before COVID lockdown probably 1-2 times a month as a treat for the rest of the staff. However, now we are both based at home he can attend every meeting with me!
what is hugo's favourite thing to do in the office? He loves to sleep under my colleagues desks but also really likes to wander around the communal area to introduce himself to everyone properly. He can’t go near any of the laboratories because it would be too hard to train him in all the safety aspects.
does hugo like sharing his office space? Very much! In fact, Hugo doesn’t really understand the concept of personal space. If he’s in the office with me then has his head resting permanently on my foot. He loves it if I use my other foot to stroke his tummy.
other than you (of course) who is hugo's favourite colleague? It has to be Natalie Allen, one of our Project Managers.
how has having Hugo at work improved the working environment? It really relaxes everyone. We work in quite a fast-paced working environment so having Hugo there makes people stop for a cuddle and a chat. I think it also helps everyone to get to know each other too because you talk to people that you don’t directly work with.
does hugo ever get up to mischief/any embarrassing office stories? He is quite mischievous generally. He likes attention and if he doesn’t get it, he will grab a shoe, run up to you, give you the ‘haha I’ve got your shoe look’ and then run off. When I first took him into the office, he attended a meeting and I popped him on a chair so he could see what was going on. HR walked past the meeting room and looked a little shocked!
paws in home bonus question! how is hugo coping with the UK on lockdown? He is in his element! I’m home all day, every day. This means constant attention. Endless cuddles. More treats.
